George Scott Academic Award

The George W. Scott Award is Trinidad State’s highest academic award for student athletes. It is named after former Trinidad State Athletic Director George Scott.

The award is presented to the Trinidad State athlete, or athletes who have participated in one or more major sports over three consecutive semesters and have the highest scholastic record of all athletes over that same period. 

1953  John Toupal  Basketball/Football

1954  Adrian Gonzales  Football/Track

1955  John Vaccaro  Baseball/Basketball/Football

1956  Joseph Gale  Football/Track/Wrestling and has also achieved a high record scholastically.

1957  Dean W. Connot  Football/Baseball/Wrestling  Dean is an engineering major, has a record of good scholarship and has played football and baseball during his two years here, has been a member of the wrestling squad both years as well as playing intramural basketball.  He is an active member of Newman Club, Engineers’ Club of which he is secretary, and Letterman’s Club.

1958  Eddie Benford  Football/Track – Eddie, a major in electronics, is a member of Tau Alpha Pi, the national scholastic honor society for vocational students.  His record as an athlete is outstanding.  He was a valuable player on the Trojan football team for two years, and he was a member of the track team, as well as being active in intramural sports, volleyball and basketball.  Eddie was elected to the vice presidency of the Student Council by the student body, and he has served as president of the Radio Club.  He was designated by members of the faculty as one of ten student leaders chosen from the sophomore class.

1959  Joseph Lomaz  Football/Track/Wrestling – Joe, a major in Building Trades, has an outstanding athletic record, as well as the highest scholastic record among his teammates.  He played football for two years with the Trojans, receiving All Conference Honorable Mention for the 1958 season of play.  He has to his credit two years on the wrestling and track squads and placed third in Conference wrestling matches.  In addition to intercollegiate sports, he has been active for two years in intramural volleyball and basketball, a member of Ichi Bon Club, Letterman’s Club, and a member of Student Council.

1960  Gerald Soulek  Football/Basketball/Baseball -  Gerald, a Liberal Arts major from Yankton, SD, has an enviable athletic record on our campus.  He lettered in football, basketball, and baseball in both his freshman and sophomore years.  He was selected for first team All-Conference football, end position, for 1959 and was also a Junior College All American second team selection. Jerry has been a valuable student on campus during his two years here.  He served as president of the student body and Student  Council, elected by the students to this position for the 1959-1960 term. He was elected by faculty as a student leader in both his freshman and sophomore years. He is a member of the Newman Club and active member of the Letterman’s Club.

1961  Richard Haase Basketball/Tennis   Dick, as he is better known, is a Pre-Law major from Trinidad. He received “letter” for his work on the basketball teams in both his freshman and sophomore years. He also won his laurels on the tennis team for two years successively. Dick has an excellent scholastic record, is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, national scholastic honor society, and served as president of Phi Theta Kappa in his sophomore year. He is the faculty selection for Typical Trojan, an honor awarded each year to one-man and one-woman student of the graduating class.

1962  James Leamer Football/Wrestling  Jim, an education major from Hollidaysburg, PA, received letters for football in his freshman and in his sophomore years.  He has been student manager for baseball two years; and has also received letters in wrestling.  A member of Letterman’s Club for two years, he has served as treasurer this year.  High Scholastic achievement won for Jim election to membership in Phi Theta Kappa, national honorary fraternity for junior college students.

1963 Gerald Langlois Football  This year’s award wend to Gerald E. Langlois, a Liberal Arts Major from Montreal, Quebec, Canada.  While at Trinidad State, Gerald earned two letters in football.  Geral’s high scholastic average won him membership to Phi Theta Kappa, National Scholastic Honorary Society for Junior College students.  Gerald was active in the International Club last year and the Chess Club this year; he was vice-president of both organizations.

1964   No George Scott Award awarded.

1965   Dennis Montrella  A Liberal Arts major from Hollidaysburg, PA.  He participated in football and was manager of the baseball team.

1966   Jim Mangino. Mangino an Automobile Mechanics major from Trinidad, lettered in football in both his freshman and sophomore years. He made the All-Empire Conference team in succession.

1967   Tom Strunk was as outstanding track and field competitor and was placed on the Dean’s Academic Recognition List during his two years at T.S.J.C.

1968  Gary Mantelli.  Mantelli was a two-year performer on TSJC football teams and a member of Phi Theta Kappa, a national junior college scholastic honor.  Gary served as Student Association president during his sophomore year.
